Let me note that these movies don't actually even have to have anything to do with LARP. They just remind you of LARP. Here are the top 5 pump up movies for LARP.
5. Running Man
4. Army of Darkness
This movie is a cult classic, especially among LARPers. It's got everything you would expect in a fantasy LARP. Time Travel, Questing, Dames, Undead, and corny dialog. I would definitely pay money to LARP with Bruce Campbell.
3. Red Dawn
Another cult classic on our list. This movie has a bunch of high schoolers fighting against communists. Let's face it, we've all had a dream like this at some point in time. WOLVERINES!
2. True Grit
This one is the catch all for the movies that get me pumped for Exiles. Since that game is a western, there's a ridiculous list of movies you could watch. Since there is a fair amount of steampunk in the game, I can understand how someone might think Wild Wild West fits this better. I respect that. I just prefer grittier games.
1. 300
Seriously. All I want from a LARP is the ability to kick someone in the chest, into a pit full of snakes or whatever else. Tim Holt almost watched this in the car on the way down to the event. I'm glad he didn't, or we would have all permed.
What're your favorite LARP movies?
I expanded mine to ten, because I can do that.
ReplyDelete1. Braveheart
2. Red Dawn
3. Serenity
4. Lord of the Rings (they all blend together and thus count as one)
5. Mazes and Monsters
6. Event Horizon
7. The Princess Bride
8. Willow
9. Ever After
10. Big Trouble, Little China
Sorry, i have another. Rocky, with the Russian.
ReplyDeleteI would concur with most of that list, but Event Horizon? I would probably crap my pants if I played a LARP as creepy as that.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I apparently spaced on Pirates of the Caribbean.
Event Horizon, seriously? Thanks Jenn, now I'm going to have the creeps all day.
ReplyDeleteThe first time an NPC showed up as the resurrected Dr. William Weir (Sam Neill), I would kill myself and choose to perm, just to escape that.
I like movies that make me feel like I can do impossible things, like Blade and the Matrix. Sets the stage for doing something where I'm "being all I can't be" :) Also, for other genres, "The Quick and the Dead" and "3:10 to Yuma"
ReplyDelete@Cecily
ReplyDeleteThose two are excellent movies for western-style pump-up. I also respect the other movies, as long as we're ignoring Matrix 2&3.
Remember the plot I did with Traci as the NPC and the little girl and the intestines? That was Event Horizon inspired. Pat, Dr. Weir, here I come.
ReplyDeleteI didn't post for exiles-ish Larp, but here they are!
1. Billy the Kid, I & II
2. Bad Girls
3. Dances with Wolves
4. Tombstone
5. Deadwood
6. Journey of Natty Gann
7. Far and Away
8. Legends of the Fall
9. The Man From Snowy River
10. The Young Riders
Ghostbusters. Hands down the most applicable movie to a LARP I have ever seen.
ReplyDeleteI cannot believe I missed that one. You sir, have bested me.

ReplyDeleteBut Monster Camp? Really? That movie makes me sad to be a LARPer.
Monster Camp is basically a movie about all the most maladjusted, socially inept weirdos at any given LARP. When we watched it, we were laughing our asses off at how the director/camera seemed to purposefully shy away from anyone that was acting mostly normal or reasonable, and instantly zoomed in on all the freakish awkwardness. They feature like 8 weirdos, but I'd assume the rest of the chapter were the regular players who weren't nearly as interesting/mock-worthy.
ReplyDeleteDon't get me wrong, I dig the movie. But it certainly doesn't get me pumped to play.
ReplyDeleteAnd you're right, they would hear one or two lines from players that seemed normal, and then they'd focus on those no-job, no-life, not so good players. I wanted to know more about the dude in the DK makeup.
I get a perverse sense of pleasure out of the fact that they keep referring to it as "Nero" in the movie, but its actually an Alliance game. Since it was made before the law suit was finished they were still using the Nero name, so now they're unwittingly providing marketing for us. :D Other people who didn't have to personally deal with the lawsuit might not get as much of a kick out of that, but that makes me smile every time I think of it. :)
ReplyDeleteMan, where can I watch Monster Camp? Been looking online, but only finding trailers...
ReplyDeleteHey, if you want the marketing for the guys in that movie you can have it- more "power" to ya!
ReplyDeleteAlso, you can watch Monster Camp for free now on Netflix.
